Tracking a "gym 3x a week" habit without turning rest days red

Most habit trackers assume every day is a workday. Skip Tuesday and the calendar goes red — even when Tuesday was never supposed to be a gym day. A habit that's genuinely "three times a week, any days" needs a tracker built around the week, not one that treats every un-checked box as a failure.

The daily-or-bust problem

"3x a week" isn't the same shape as "every day"

Gym three times a week, floss every day, therapy twice a month, physio on whatever days actually work — these are real commitments, but none of them map onto a fixed daily checklist. Force them into one and you get two kinds of false signal.

Rest days read as missed days

If a routine expects a check-in every day, then the four days a week you deliberately don't go to the gym show up looking identical to the days you meant to go and didn't. The streak view can't tell "planned rest" from "skipped it" — both are just an empty box.

A perfect week still looks incomplete

Go Monday, Wednesday, and Friday exactly as planned, and a daily tracker still shows a week with four blanks in it — a habit you nailed rendered as mostly unfinished, which is discouraging for no reason connected to what you actually did.

How Groundkeep handles it

The week is the unit, not the day

A Groundkeep routine can be set up either way: fixed days (Monday, Wednesday, Friday) for habits that really are day-specific, or a weekly-target count for habits that aren't. In weekly-target mode, the target lives at the level of the week — hit it three times anywhere inside those seven days and the week reads as complete, regardless of which three days you picked.

01Set the target, not the scheduleCreate the routine as "Gym — 3x / week" instead of pinning it to Mon/Wed/Fri. The count is what matters; the specific days are yours to choose week to week.
02Log a completion any day it happensEach time you go, it's logged against that day. Routine completions are just a running list of dates — there's no requirement that they land on a preset pattern.
03The week fills in as you goGroundkeep counts completions falling inside the current week against the weekly target, so the third gym visit — whatever day it lands on — is what closes out that week.
04Off days stay neutral, not redA day with no log entry isn't automatically a miss. It only becomes a shortfall if the week ends without reaching the target — the day itself carries no red mark on its own.

Routines sit next to the rest of Groundkeep's day-to-day tools — tasks, calendar, a focus timer, journal, and weekly review — so a "3x/week" habit like gym or therapy shows up in the same weekly review as everything else you're tracking, not off in a separate app with its own login.
